The rat temple near Bikaner dates back to the 14th Century when Karni Mata, an incarnation of the Hindu god Durga, asked the god of death to reincarnate the son of a greiving story teller. When he refused she reincarnated all dead story tellers as rats. The temple has around 30000 rats in residence who are fed by devotees to Karni Mata. Shoes are not allowed and it is considered auspicious if you see an albino rat or a rat runs over your feet!
