The Name: Ahilya Fort
The Place: Maheshwar on the banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh
What’s it like: Towering above the river the fort and home of Richard Holkar has 12 wonderfully individual rooms. Set around courtyards and gardens the views over the river are spectacular. Nearby Mandu’s forts and palaces and Omkareshwar’s temple island are fascinating. The cusine is delicious and much of it is grown organically in the forts gardens.
What we love: The bedrooms, numerous sitting rooms and intimate courtyards are filled with paintings, books, sculptures and wonderful flowers. Drinks on the terrace watching the sunset over the river. This is simple stylish luxury at it’s very best.
What to avoid: A short stay as it would be criminal.
India Beat Verdict: One of the best hotels in India and certainly the best in Madhya Pradesh.
